Origin of German Language
Spoken primarily in Germany, Austria, Liechtenstein and two-thirds of Switzerland, German is the most extensively spoken first language in the EU , above both French and English. German has close to 100 million native speakers across Europe, as well as many other speakers worldwide.
English and German languages belong to the Germanic family. English, as a matter of fact, was originally a variety of West Germanic in approximately 500 BC. It was not until 200-700 AD that both languages began to diverge, in those days they were “High German” and “Old English”. Over the centuries these dialects continued to adapt and evolve into the distinct languages we know today.
The modern German government is heavily involved in promoting the German language throughout Europe and the world. Its worldwide organization, the Goethe Institut promotes the study of language abroad and teaches about art and culture associated with Germany. “Instituts” can be found in 92 countries worldwide, including a branch on Cuba Street in Wellington.
Another fact for you: German is the only major language that capitalizes all nouns.
